The recent restructuring of TikTok's operations in the United States serves as a stark illustration of this evolving risk. A new entity, the TikTok USDS joint venture, spearheaded by a coalition of prominent US technology companies including Oracle, has assumed control over the platform's functions. While framed as a measure to comply with US legislation aimed at safeguarding user data and preventing foreign political interference, this arrangement has ignited concerns among TikTok's substantial American user base. Many fear that this algorithmic control could be exploited to suppress dissenting voices, mirroring accusations previously leveled against China's influence over the platform.

In the days following this transition, numerous reports of anomalous activity have surfaced from US TikTok users. These include videos addressing sensitive topics, such as ongoing investigations into the death of a federal agent; a noticeable decline in viewership for newly posted content; and allegations of restricted access to keywords like "Epstein." These reports have prompted calls for regulatory scrutiny, with California Governor Gavin Newsom urging a thorough review of TikTok's algorithm to ensure compliance with state laws. The concerns have been so widespread that many users are actively seeking alternative platforms, evidenced by a decline in app store downloads.

TikTok USDS has acknowledged some disruptions but vehemently denied any politically motivated manipulation, attributing the issues to a power outage at an Oracle data center that triggered cascading system failures. However, a comprehensive assessment of the changes' true impact will require considerable time and in-depth analysis. Nevertheless, the current situation has understandably heightened user apprehension.

It is likely that the most significant changes will manifest in how the algorithm serves content to users, potentially leading to the amplification of certain viewpoints while marginalizing others.
